Ice cream in Taos

It was 103 degrees and we were craving something cool. Unfortunately it seems that a lot of place in the Southwest don't have good ice cream, which surprises me because it's so hot and you'd think that ice cream would be a booming business.

In Trinidad CO the only ice cream they had was a Dairy Queen. No thanks.

In Raton we had to settle for popsicles from the store. They were good, but they weren't ice cream. Nearly exhausted we pulled into Taos NM. In such a bustling community we were sure to find a local a ice cream shoppe. While Dad stayed at the local library to blog, Mom took us to find ice cream.

We had seen a place driving in, the Cafe Razzo, which had an ice cream parlor in the back. Unfortunately the blistering heat had caused their freezer to break down. The consistency of the ice cream was the same as thick vegetable soup. The woman at the counter said there were no good ice cream shops in Taos. How could this be? Defeated, we moseyed to the town center plaza to get me a hat and rest in the shade.

Then we saw it. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is a famous chain of candy shoppes that produces some pretty darn good chocolate. In fact it's even mentioned in the book "Cruising the Fossil Freeway," our guidebook for fossil hunting. And there was one located right across from us — and it had ice cream!

I got coffee in waffle cone that tasted like it was freshly made with real brown sugar. Ah!
